Children and adolescents rely on the adults in their lives to guide them and advise them towards the values that will stand them in good stead for the future.
It was therefore a joy to read an article concerning a mum who disagreed with the psychiatric drugging culture that has become so prevalent. Debra, the mum of Will.i.am, chose not to allow him to take psychiatric drugs like Ritalin.
What a fantastic mum. Some children, however, are not so lucky. Parents are being misled by psychiatric spin-doctors who have cleverly manoeuvred and marketed their drugs to suggest something beneficial occurs when schoolchildren take them. The drugs may chemically restrain a child in the classroom to give the impression something therapeutic is going on, when in fact, all that’s happening is the child is being drugged.
Take it one step further. Researchers have found mind-altering ADHD drugs greatly decrease academic performance in children. Researchers from Princeton University, Cornell University and the University of Toronto found the drugs left students at a deficit when it came to paying attention and learning in the classroom.
The dumbing down of state education has been an issue for years but it gets even worse when children are trying to learn through a chemical haze. They are now being chemically dumbed down, exacerbating the problem of academic performance.
Drugging children has become big business. In 2019 1.5 million prescription items for ADHD drugs were dispensed in England alone at a cost of over £59 million. It’s big business but, as has been said before, it’s bad medicine. It’s profiteering on the basis of opinions from highly paid guessers at the expense of children and adolescents.
For time immemorial, children have been boisterous, argumentative and even disruptive. That’s a given. For time immemorial, they’ve also been full of energy, full of life and full of vitality. These are behaviours that should be embraced and channelled towards creativity rather than being chemically restrained and thwarted.
We must not resign ourselves to the deception and submit to the psychobabble from pharmaceutical companies and psychiatrists. Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says ‘Everyone has the right to education.’ We must all work to make this a reality and like Debra, don’t allow your children to take psychiatric drugs. You never know, you may be nurturing the next Will.i.am.
As Will.i.am is reported to have said:
“What’s wrong with our society is that we want to pull everything back, stop people thinking out of the box and make everyone the same. I’ve never wanted to be the same as anyone else.”
“We need to deal with this issue because it is getting out of hand. It’s destroying so much potential and no one gives a damn.”
